When it comes to intermodal transportation, where cargo is hauled across diverse terrains and through challenging weather conditions, fleet operators frequently face concerns about how well their chassis can endure corrosion, long miles, and the heavy weights they carry. At Jansteel, we’ve engineered our gooseneck chassis with these challenges in mind, offering a robust solution that prioritizes strength, longevity, and protection against the elements.

Corrosion Resistance for Harsh and Coastal Environments

One of the most significant durability concerns for any chassis operator is corrosion, especially for those working in coastal regions or other environments where exposure to salt and moisture can quickly degrade materials. To combat this, Jansteel has incorporated a weather-resistant primer and 70% zinc powder-coating paint into our chassis finishing process, ensuring maximum protection against corrosion.

Our painting process begins with an abrasive blast of all metal surfaces, removing impurities and creating a clean base that allows for better adhesion of coatings. The chassis is then treated with marine-grade paint, including a 70% zinc-rich primer. This primer provides a protective barrier that resists the corrosive effects of salt and moisture, prolonging the life of the chassis even in the toughest environments.

On top of this, we apply a true acrylic aliphatic polyurethane topcoat, which is highly resistant to UV rays and harsh weather conditions. This dual-layer approach ensures that your chassis not only resists corrosion but also maintains its integrity and appearance for the long haul.

Designed for Potholes, Heavy Loads, and Long Miles

While corrosion resistance is key in coastal areas, the ability of a chassis to endure the day-to-day challenges of rough roads, potholes, and heavy loads is equally important. Jansteel’s chassis is constructed using Grade A steel with hot rolled beams, engineered to ensure both strength and flexibility. The inclusion of integrated gussets further reinforces critical areas, minimizing the risk of cracking or failure over time.

Our Grade 80 gooseneck is designed to handle substantial weight without bending or warping, a critical feature for operators carrying heavy or oversized loads. Additionally, the chassis features a reinforcement strap underneath the gooseneck, made from the same high-strength steel, providing extra support and ensuring that the gooseneck remains stable even under extreme pressure.

The combination of high-quality materials and a reinforced design means that Jansteel’s chassis can withstand the physical toll of long-distance hauls, frequent loading and unloading, and the inevitable encounters with rough terrain, potholes, and adverse road conditions.

Weather-Resistant Primer and Coating Process

We go beyond structural strength by ensuring that our chassis is equipped with a high-performance coating system to withstand the environmental challenges it will face throughout its lifespan. After the steel has been blasted clean to remove any surface impurities, the zinc-rich primer (with a minimum of 70% zinc content) is applied to form the first layer of protection.

This primer layer acts as a shield, offering corrosion resistance comparable to that used in marine environments, where equipment is regularly exposed to saltwater and harsh weather. On top of this, a true acrylic aliphatic polyurethane topcoat is applied. This black topcoat provides additional UV protection, ensuring the chassis resists fading and degradation from prolonged exposure to sunlight and weather extremes.

For ease of container handling, the front pin locks, bolster castings, and rear twist locks are finished in yellow, making these points easy to locate and enhancing operational efficiency.

Built to Last

Jansteel’s combination of high-strength steel, weather-resistant coatings, and thoughtful design results in a chassis that doesn’t just meet industry standards—it exceeds them. Whether you’re operating in a coastal region with constant salt exposure or traversing rough highways with heavy loads, our gooseneck chassis are designed to take on the challenges without compromising on durability.

Investing in Long-Term Performance

At Jansteel, we believe that durability is more than just a selling point—it’s a necessity for our customers. By utilizing Grade A steel, Grade 80 gooseneck designs, and a marine-grade coating system, we offer a chassis that stands up to the harshest conditions while ensuring long-term performance. Our weather-resistant primer and 70% zinc powder-coating paint protect against corrosion, while the reinforced structure of our chassis keeps it going strong mile after mile.
